At least 13 dead after fire breaks out on passenger plane

At least 13 people have been killed after a Russian plane caught fire mid-air before making an emergency landing at a Moscow airport.

News has emerged that an Aeroflot Sukhoi Superjet, was forced into making an emergency landing at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport before bursting into flames on the runway.

Videos on social media showed a number of passengers using emergency exit slides to escape and run away from the burning aircraft.

A number of news outlets are reporting that two children are among the 13 people who have been reported dead.

According to BBC, one witness said that it was a “miracle” anyone escaped the jet, which was reportedly carrying 78 passengers.

It is currently unclear what caused the incident.

The crew on board issued a distress signal shortly after departure from Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport, and it is believed that they plane failed after attempting an emergency landing.

An investigation has been opened into the incident by the Russia’s Investigative Committee.
