POLL RESULTS: A majority of JOE readers think we should be allowed to drink and drive

Tony Cuddihy

Slightly worrying.

Last week, we ran a poll asking our readers whether drink driving should be allowed under any circumstances.

Over 3,000 of you voted, with a slight majority of 51% stating that it should be legal to consume alcohol before driving a vehicle.

We ran the poll after an interview given by Minister for Transport Shane Ross to The Irish Times, in which he called for harsher penalties for people caught driving with alcohol in their system.

First offence drink drivers currently receive penalty points on their licence, Ross wants to amend this so that drink drivers are immediately disqualified from driving.

Ross is also planning to increase the penalty points for drivers using mobile phones from three points to six points.
