Post office west Cork closes 160 years

A major reduction.

An Post confirmed this week that 161 postmasters have applied for the An Post’s voluntary retirement package, which will lead to widespread closures of post offices throughout Ireland.

According to a statement from An Post, “This will likely result in the closure of 161 post offices out of a network of 1,111 post offices.”

950 post offices will be retained.

As of yet, it is unclear exactly which post offices will be closing, but An Post has confirmed that they will publish the full list at the end of August once details have been agreed with each retiring postmaster.

However, some details have been confirmed by An Post: “An Post reaffirms its commitment that communities of over 500 people will have a post office and that over 95% of the population will be within 15km of at least one post office. All island post offices are being retained.”
