It is believed his wife was also injured in an attack on his home.

Jovenel Moise, the President of Haiti, has been assassinated, the country’s interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph has confirmed.

It is believed that his wife, Martine Moise, was also injured in an attack by an unidentified group of people that took place at his home late on Tuesday.

Martine Moise is currently receiving treatment for her injuries in hospital.

On Wednesday morning, the Haitian Embassy in Canada confirmed the news “with great sadness”, describing the attackers as “mercenaries”, saying that First Lady Moise was receiving “the necessary care” and adding that their “hearts go out to the presidential family and to the whole nation”.

Joseph described the attack as a “hateful, inhumane and barbaric act”.

Haiti has been affected by a climate of economic and political instability in recent times, with Moise facing calls to step down from the opposition earlier this year amid increasing violence and social unrest in the country, which is still feeling the effects of a devastating earthquake in 2010 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016.

General elections are due to take place in Haiti later this year.
