Secondary students in fifth year will also return.

The Department of Education has confirmed that all primary classes will return to school next Monday.

It comes after pupils from junior infants to second class, as well as sixth year students in secondary, began physically attending school again last week on 1 March.

The plan at the time was that the remaining primary students would be back in school on Monday 15 March, depending on the suppression of Covid-19.

It was also intended that fifth year secondary school students would return on this date.

Now, in a letter to principals, the Department of Health reaffirmed “the gradual phased reopening can proceed as planned”.

The letter reads: “Public health has reviewed the measures put in place to ensure safe operation of schools and is satisfied that these infection prevention and control measures, if rigorously adhered to, will keep the school community safe during this period.”

It also urges schools to take every effort to avoid organising events that could lead to pupils congregating.

The letter also asks schools to remind pupils and their parents not to gather in school grounds and at school gates.

All other secondary students are set to go back to school on 12 April after the Easter holidays.
