“The Council are currently looking into the processes involved with the name change of Orwell Road.”
Part of Orwell Road, the road where the Russian Embassy is located in Dublin, could be renamed “Independent Ukraine Road” under a new proposal.
This is as a Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council (DLRCC) sub-committee has unanimously voted in favour of the name change.
The motion was proposed by Labour Councillor Peter O’Brien as a way to show solidarity with Ukraine, with all 20 councillors at the Dundrum area monthly meeting of the council agreeing to the move.
At this evenings @dlrcc Meeting myself, @OConnorOisin & other members will submit the below motion calling for the council to engage with residents and rename the road the Russian Embassy is located to Independent Ukraine Road. #UkraineUnderAttack #StandWithUkraine️ 🇺🇦💙💛 pic.twitter.com/Hs0NW5m0EF

“The Council are currently looking into the processes involved with the name change of Orwell Road,” a DLRCC spokesperson told JOE.
“No name change can happen without prior consultation with the residents.”
Residents of Orwell Road are now set to be consulted with about the potential name change.
Orwell Road stretches from the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown area to the Dublin City Council area, but the Russian Embassy is located in the former.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a number of protests have taken place outside the embassy.
Earlier this week, a truck reversed into its gates, breaking them in the process.
