Tubridy has not hosted his show since June after becoming embroiled in the RTÉ secret payment scandal.

Ryan Tubridy’s radio show has seen a drop in its listenership since the host was taken off the air.

According to Joint National Listenership Research (JNLR) figures back in May of this year, 335,000 people tuned into The Ryan Tubridy Show on RTÉ Radio 1 each weekday.

However, new numbers from JNLR released on Thursday (17 August) show that the programme’s listenership has fallen by 1,000 to 334,000.

Tubridy has not hosted the radio show since June after becoming embroiled in the much-publicised RTÉ secret payment scandal.

This followed the revelation that the presenter’s annual earnings between 2017 and 2022 had been understated by the broadcaster and that he was paid over €300,000 more during this time than initially declared.

However, talks are said to be ongoing about the host’s return to the airwaves.

Also, according to the new JNLR figures, RTÉ Radio reaches 1,963,000 million listeners every week and holds 17 of the top 20 radio programmes broadcasting in Ireland.

This is as RTÉ Radio 1 remains the only station with a weekly reach of over 1 million at 1,370,000.

As well as this, RTÉ 2FM has a weekly reach figure of 697,000, while RTÉ Lyric FM attracts 298,000 listeners on a weekly basis.

You can see a breakdown of RTÉ Radio 1’s listenership below:

  • Morning Ireland - 440,000 listeners (437,000 in May)
  • Today with Claire Byrne – 323,000 listeners (327,000 in May)

  • Sunday with Miriam – 287,000 listeners (292,000 in May)

Speaking about the ratings, Head of RTÉ Radio 1 Peter Woods  said in a statement:

“There are strong performances across all our core programmes, ensuring RTÉ Radio 1 is the primary destination for news, current affairs and for entertainment also.

“This is a book that shows RTÉ Radio 1 is continuing to connect with audiences across right across the week.”

In terms of RTÉ 2FM, its breakfast show hosted by Doireann Garrihy, Donncha O’Callaghan and Carl Mullan saw a rise in listeners from 135,000 in May to 138,000, as did Drive It with The 2 Johnnies with the numbers tuning into that programme leaping from 130,000 to 140,000.

Meanwhile, the listenership for Jennifer Zamparelli’s 2FM show held steady at 133,000 listeners.
