Ryanair flight struck by lightning on the way to Dublin

Carl Kinsella

In the same weekend when an Aer Lingus plane was forced to land in Dublin after a bird strike, a Ryanair plane to Dublin was struck by lightning.

The flight, which took off from Luton in the UK on Saturday, was hit by lightning just seconds after takeoff leaving passengers confused and frightened, according to The Sun.

A passenger on Flight FR338 said that the strike came with a loud bang no more than 90 seconds into the flight as the plane continued to climb. Fortunately nobody was hurt, and the plane was able to land safely at Dublin Airport.

Speaking to The Sun, a Ryanair spokesperson confirmed the incident, saying “This flight from London Luton to Dublin encountered a lightning strike shortly after departure from Luton Airport, before continuing its flight and landing normally.”

The eyewitness also reported that the safe landing of the plane was greeted with loud applause… Though if you’ve ever shared a plane with Irish people, you’ll know that’s just part for the course.
