WATCH: Pro-Brexit MP claims that “Irish Government and the EU contrived the border in Ireland”

“They have created a problem that does not exist.”

At this point, it does feel like a case of ‘Another Day. Another silly thing said about Ireland and/or Brexit’.

In the last 48 hours alone, we’ve had a Labour MP find her remarks about the IRA, Brexit, and a United Ireland face extremely strong criticism, before doubling down to state that “The Irish government and the European Union have connived together.”

We’ve also had a pro-Brexit MP ushered away from live debate by a Sky News host because he decided to pretend to look at his phone mid-debate.

It is all getting a bit mad and a bit OTT, and today, we have another example.

Sammy Wilson, the Democratic Unionist Party MP for East Antrim, made a series of statements at a Leave Means Leave assembly in the last few days, with some of quotes including:

“The Irish government and the EU Commission sat down and contrived the biggest con trick they could think of: a border in Ireland.”

“They have created a problem that does not exist.”

“So they haven’t just kissed the Blarney Stone, they’ve made love to it.”

Unsurprisingly, the speech has since picked up traction online, with Wilson coming under fire for some of his more incendiary remarks.
