A controversial statement, to say the least.

The DUP have accused the Irish Government of being “self-centred” and “hysterical”, with regards to their Brexit negotiations.

MP Sammy Wilson issued a statement in response to Tánaiste Simon Coveney’s criticism of Boris Johnson, where he described the newly elected PM’s Brexit speech as “a very bad day.”

Wilson’s response accused Ireland of styling themselves as “the victims of British aggression.”

According to Newstalk, Wilson replied in full by saying: “The hysterical and self-centred response from the Irish Government to the reasonable demands of the Prime Minister to have the backstop removed from any exit deal from the European Union speaks volumes.

“The Irish Government walked the world stage and styled themselves as the victims of British aggression.

“‘Poor little Ireland’ may have worked in the past but people are growing tired of the same old tune. The game is up.”

The statement isn’t Wilson’s first time critiquing Ireland’s involvement in Brexit negotiations either.

In December of 2018, he controversially said: “The Irish government and the EU Commission sat down and contrived the biggest con trick they could think of: a border in Ireland.”

“They have created a problem that does not exist.”

“So they haven’t just kissed the Blarney Stone, they’ve made love to it.”

A real charmer, as you can see.
