Sepp Blatter could be set to do a U-turn on his FIFA resignation

We may not have seen the last of him

Swiss newspaper Schweiz am Sonntag claim that Sepp Blatter may renege on his promise to resign as FIFA president…

According to the publication, Blatter has received numerous messages of support from African and Asian football associations, imploring him to reconsider.

It cites an anonymous source close to Blatter saying he is honoured by the support and has not ruled out a U-turn.

Domenico Scala, the independent chairman of FIFA’s audit and compliance committee, reacted to the rumours by arguing that the resignation should be honoured.

“For me, the reforms are the central topic. That is why I think it is clearly indispensable to follow through with the initiated process of president’s change as it has been announced,” said Scala.

Damian Collins MP echoed Scala’s sentiments when speaking to the Telegraph: “Scala is right to speak out against this. FIFA needs to understand that unless Blatter goes and there is real reform that it could be the end of the organisation.

“Blatter said in 2011 that he wouldn’t stand again for president and then changed his mind. He will do anything now to keep influence over FIFA, to frustrate real reform and try to protect his rotten legacy.”
