Minister Shane Ross congratulates Sanita Puspure on gold medal win, but manages to get her name wrong

This isn’t even the first time he’s got a major Irish sports star’s name wrong this year.

Earlier today, Sanita Puspure proved to be without equal in the women’s single sculls final at the World Rowing Championships, going on to win gold for Ireland.

In their coverage of the win, RTE News went with a headline of “Dominant Sanita Puspure powers to world rowing gold for Ireland”, and it would seem that fairly easy-to-understand sentence caused some confusion for some.

A press release sent by Minister Shane Ross also had a headline. An eerily similar headline: “Ministers congratulate Dominant on her assured dominance which led to long deserved gold”.

It would seem that somebody thinks Sanita Puspure’s actual first name is Dominant, and it not being a word used to describe her abilities.

You’ll remember back in March this year, when the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport shouted out Johnny Sexton and Dave Kearney on Twitter despite posing with the older of the Kearney brothers…

Maybe he’s just making it a bit of a running joke at this point?

Although if he is, nobody else seems to be in on it…

Still, that shouldn’t be enough to distract from Puspure’s amazing win!
