The incident took place at approximately 2am on Thursday.

A man has been arrested following an incident of endangerment that occurred in Aughavas, Leitrim, in the early hours of Thursday morning (29 September).

The incident took place at approximately 2am when a car crashed through the gates of a family residence, understood to belong to Sinn Féin TD Martin Kenny.

A man in his late 40s was taken to Cavan General Hospital to be treated for his injuries. As of Friday afternoon, the man has been arrested on suspicion of endangerment and has been detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at Carrick-on-Shannon Garda station.

Investigations are ongoing.

In an online edition of the Leitrim Observer, Kenny thanked the emergency services for their quick response before stating he would be making no further comment in light of the Garda investigation into the incident.

“I would like to thank the Gardai and ambulance services who arrived quickly on the scene to deal with the incident and the driver of the vehicle,” said Kenny.

A spokesperson for Sinn Féin told the Irish Times:

“This was a distressing and traumatic incident for Martin’s wife and family. We are glad they are unhurt, and everyone extends solidarity to Martin and his family at this time.

“Martin has thanked the emergency services for their speedy response. As there is a live Garda investigation into this incident, we cannot comment further.”
