Niamh Fitzpatrick, whose sister Dara perished in Tuesday morning rescue helicopter accident off the coast of Mayo, was speaking on Morning Ireland.

The sister of the late Captain Dara Fitzpatrick insists that she died having lived life to its fullest, and that she had been “all about family.”

Niamh Fitzpatrick was speaking on Morning Ireland about the loss of Dara on Tuesday, following the accident in the early hours of the morning off the west coast.

Captain Fitzpatrick was the first female commercial pilot in the country and went on to be the first female captain in the country.

“It never occurred to Dara that she couldn’t do this because she was female. It wasn’t easy for her to be the only female in a male environment but there was never any question of her gender (affecting her ability to do the job),” she said.

“She loved it, and she worked hard at it, and she was excellent at it.”

Niamh also paid tribute to the emergency services who stayed with the family at their darkest hour.
