A 22-year-old Slovenian woman has been sentenced to two years in prison after she was convicted of deliberately cutting off her hand with a circular saw in order to make a fraudulent insurance claim.

Slovenia’s news agency STA reported this week that her partner, a 30-year-old male was sentenced to three years in prison in Ljubljana District Court for putting her up to it.

The man’s father also received a one year suspended sentence.

The court ruled the woman had agreed with her boyfriend to have her hand cut off above the wrist at their home in early 2019.

She was detained last year after it was alleged she had deliberately cut off her hand in order to receive almost €400,000 in compensation.

She had just recently signed a number of life and injury insurance contracts with multiple providers.

STA reported that the group did not bring the severed limb to the hospital with them initially but police recovered the limb and it was reattached in the hospital.

Both her and her partner pleaded not guilty of attempted insurance fraud. It’s unclear if the couple will appeal the judgement.
