18 counties will be affected by a status yellow snow-ice warning issued by Met Éireann in the early hours of Monday morning as the week gets off to a bitterly cold start.

After a low temperature warning was issued for the entire country on Sunday evening warning of temperatures as low as -5 degrees on Monday morning, Met Éireann’s latest warning forecasts snow and ice in more than half the country on Monday night.

The entire province of Leinster, as well as Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim, East Cork, Tipperary and Waterford will be affected by the warning, with falls of snow leading to hazardous conditions on roads and footpaths.

Issued at 5am on Monday morning, the warning will come into effect at 6pm on Monday and remain in place until 4am on Tuesday, with temperatures set to drop below freezing again on Monday night and remain low throughout Tuesday afternoon.

If you’re out and about or getting behind the wheel on Monday morning, meanwhile, make sure to exercise extreme caution, as with temperatures dropping to between -3 and -5 degrees overnight, conditions on untreated roads and footpaths are likely to be very dangerous.

It doesn’t look like it’s going to get much warmer for the rest of the week judging by the extended forecast; best be sure to have those extra layers in reserve until the weekend at the earliest.
