The cold spell continues and it’s not coming to an end for a while yet.

Another day of January and yet another weather warning from Met Éireann as Ireland remains gripped in a spell of wintry weather that has given little respite since the start of 2018.

On Thursday morning, Met Éireann issued the latest status yellow snow and ice warning, which applies to Donegal, Leitrim, west Cavan and north Monaghan, with snow accumulations of 3cm expected, mainly on high ground.

The warning, issued at 6am, will remain in effect until 10am on Thursday morning, but judging by the forecast, it won’t be the last weather warning we can expect to see in the coming days.

Wintry showers are expected to continue with the risk of hail and thunder on Thursday and there will be more of them on Friday and Saturday, although heavy rain is more likely to affect most of the country.

There are promising signs for Sunday, when it is expected to be milder, with sunny spells and temperatures even reaching as high as 11 degrees.

Monday is also expected to be dry and sunny, although a little bit cooler than Sunday, but that spell of decent weather will be all too brief, with rain expected to return once again on Tuesday.

More than two days of decent weather was asking for a lot given the weather we’ve endured lately in fairness.
