Snow incoming as freezing temperatures prompt weather warnings across Ireland

Snow is likely to land in Ireland across the week ahead as Met Éireann have issued a Status Yellow weather warning for all counties.

Temperatures reached as low as -4 overnight on Sunday, January 14, with freezing conditions causing frost and ice across the country.

Looking to the week ahead, the national forecaster have predicted that the cold snap will continue, and snow looks likely for the coming days.

For Monday, January 15, Met Éireann issued three separate Status Yellow warnings.

The first warning is a Low Temperature/Ice warning for Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo, which was put in place from 7pm on Sunday until 11am on Monday.

The second Low Temperature/Ice warning is in place for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Munster, Galway and Roscommon, again from 7pm on Sunday until 11am on Monday.

For both warnings, Met Éireann said: “Very cold overnight and early Monday morning with the danger of icy patches. Some freezing fog patches locally also.”

The third warning issued is for Snow-Ice warning for Donegal from 6pm on Monday until 11am on Tuesday.

Along with the warning, the forecaster said: “Scattered wintry showers will give way to more widespread sleet or snow for a time overnight with the potential for small accumulations.”

In their overview for the week, Met Éireann added: “Very cold through the working week with widespread frost and ice leading to hazardous travelling conditions. Plenty of dry weather expected away from the north and northwest where wintry showers will be most frequent.”
