Some of the new words added to the Oxford English Dictionary will make you feel very old

Welcome to the future

The English language has come so far…

The Oxford English Dictionary has revealed which new words and phrases have made the cut this quarter, with food and drink chief among the providers of new turns of phrase.

Hangry (to become angry as a result of your hunger) is now a legitimate word, with exotic foods matcha and barbacoa also making it in.

Colloquial terms like NBD (short for ‘no big deal’) have been added, alongside other words that have emerged from the digital age such as Redditor (a Reddit user), and ragequit (when you get so furious about how a game is going that you give up).

Perhaps most importantly, bants has been inducted, meaning that it’s now perfectly acceptable to say that to our hearts’ content.

So too has manspreading (the way men usually spread themselves out over furniture or public transport seats) and rando (the Americanised version of ‘randomer’).

The political atmosphere has also taken its toll, with words like Brexit and Grexit (which refer to the prospect of Great Britain and Greece exiting the EU) making it in.

Other words you’ll want to get familiar with include manic pixie dream girl, microaggression, social justice warrior, mecha, kayfabe, MacGyver and butthurt.

That’s right, butthurt.
