A special ‘fun-raiser’ tag rugby and family fun event will take place in aid of Berkeley survivor Aoife Beary this Saturday.

A mixed tag rugby tournament will take place at Old Wesley Rugby Club, while there’ll also be a barbeque, entertainment for the kids, all-day music and a bar for the older guests in what promises to be a great day in Donnybrook.

The event is being held in aid of Aoife Beary, who was celebrating her 21st birthday in Berkeley last month when she was injured in a tragedy that claimed the lives of six Irish J1 students.

Aoife remains in a critical condition with a serious head injury, she has a long journey ahead of her and she and her family will need all the support they can get.

100% of funds raised will go directly towards helping Aoife as she continues the fight of her life with the bravery & determination that she is known for.

Leinster, Ireland and Lions star Sean O’Brien will be on hand on the day for the prize-giving ceremony, while the IRFU have kindly allowed free use of the grounds on the day.

Aoife remains in rehabilitation from her injuries in Santa Clara Medical Center, just south of San Francisco, where her cousin, Eimear O’Doherty, visited her on a recent 10-day trip to the US.

Eimear was was glad to report to Colm Hayes and Al Porter on RTÉ 2fm’s DriveBy that Aoife is improving, even if she does have a long road ahead of her.

“She’s moved from ICU and she’s in Santa Clara Medical Center, which is a rehabilitation centre, where Clodagh and Hannah are as well,” Eimear said.

“She’s doing much better; she still has her good days and bad days. The biggest concern at the minute is her brain injury, so that’s going to be a long road.”
