The term was added as both a noun and a verb.

If you have spent any time at all on the internet over the past few years, we’re sure you’ve seen the term ‘stan’ used in some context.

It derives from the classic Eminem song of the same name, which is written from the perspective of an overly obsessed fan who ultimately kills himself and his pregnant wife, because Eminem won’t write back to his fan mail.

Since then, the term ‘stan’ has been used to describe fans who are perhaps a little bit too invested in the lives of the celebrities they worship.

Or to quote the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it is “an extremely or excessively enthusiastic and devoted fan”.

The term has just been added to the dictionary as both a noun and a verb, with the verb being described as: “to exhibit fandom to an extreme or excessive degree: to be an extremely devoted and enthusiastic fan of someone or something.”

To put in a sentence, for example: “I stanned Eminem a lot as a teenager, but I’m not that into his newer stuff.”

So there you have it. Don’t ever tell the Merriam-Webster dictionary they don’t keep up with the times.

We stan a modern dictionary.
