Some forecasters are predicting two more storms to hit Ireland this week in the days that follow Storm Helene.
Currently, all eyes are on post-Tropical Storm Helene, as she barrels towards Ireland. Already there have been
rain warnings issued for some counties, and there may yet be wind warnings to be issued for the south-east region.
However, some outlets are already looking passed Helene, with an eye on two separate depressions in the Atlantic that are also heading towards Ireland, and both are predicted to arrive in the next few days.
These same outlets have already begun referring to these depressions as Storm Ali and Storm Bronagh, but speaking to JOE, Met Éireann confirmed that neither of the depressions had been named yet.
"Only us here in Met Éireann, and those working the UK Met office can name these storms. What people are seeing are depressions in the Atlantic, and assuming that they will become named storms, and that is not the case."
We asked if and when these depressions may become named storms, and they stated that it is a case-by-case basis, with some named within 24 hours, and some named a few days out, but they expected that should these depressions become named storms, it would usually be "within 36 hours" of them arriving in Ireland.
At the moment,
Met Eireann's official forecast for the coming mid-week is as follows:
"Early on Wednesday, rain will spread eastwards across the country along with fresh to strong southwest winds for most areas, but possibly reaching gale force near northwestern coasts. Scattered showers will follow and winds will ease in the evening. Highest temperatures of 15 to 18 degrees. More rain will develop in the south on Wednesday night.
"Thursday is currently looking like the better of the days with rain clearing to showers and winds easing light southwest to west for a time. They will increase again later. The unsettled weather pattern continues through to the weekend with breezy conditions and rain at times."
Midlands Weather Channel had the following to say about the
two new potential storms:
"Beyond Helene it looks increasingly likely that we may experience two more Atlantic storms this coming week, with storm Ali possibly affecting western areas on Wednesday, before the rapid development of storm Bronagh on Thursday (however models are uncertain at present)."
Meanwhile,
Carlow Weather said the following:
"A potentially bigger concern is showing for Wednesday with what could be Storm Ali as strong gusts arrive in the West along with more very heavy rain."
