The shooting occurred shortly after midnight on Monday May 6 in the Knocknarea Road area of Drimnagh.
A man was pronounced dead at the scene.
RTE News report that the man's body remains at the scene while a post-mortem is being arranged.
The scene of the shooting is currently preserved for examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.
In a statement, the Gardai said that three men have since been arrested as part of their investigation into the shooting.
It has since been reported that a suspected pipe bomb has been found close to the young man's body.

One line of investigation is that the attackers targeted a man in another car.

The investigation is being led by a senior investigating officer (SIO) and an incident room has been established at Sundrive Road Garda Station.
The three men are currently detained at Garda stations across Dublin under Section 30 of the Offences Against The State Act.
Gardai are appealing for anyone with any information to come forawrd and to contact Sundrive Road Garda Station on 01 666 6600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
