He served as Taoiseach from 1973 to 1977.
Former Taoiseach and Fine Gael leader Liam Cosgrave has died at the age of 97.
He was first elected to the Dáil in 1943 and represented his party as a TD in Dublin County constituency.
He served as parliamentary secretary and also held a post as Minister for External Affairs from 1954 to 1957.
Cosgrave was made party leader of Fine Gael in 1965 and eight years later became Taoiseach and head of a Fine Gael and Labour Coalition Government.
He was at the helm of that Government from 1973 to 1977 before opposition party Fianna Fáil won a landslide electoral victory soon after.
He resigned as party leader shortly after that and eventually left the Dáil in 1981.
Liam Cosgrave was also the son of W.T. Cosgrave, head of the State’s first government from 1922 to 1932.
