That’s a hell of a trip.

St Patrick’s Day in Dublin saw a sharp increase in demand for taxis as people took to the streets to view the parade, socialise and then return home in the early hours of the morning.

Bolt, a taxi hailing platform, reported a 3.5x increase in demand for taxis on St Patrick’s Day in comparison to a regular Thursday.

Unsurprisingly, demand spiked for taxis between 12am and 4am, where demand was almost 30 times the same period the previous week.

On the Bolt app, the longest journey recorded was a trip from Dublin all the way up to Letterkenny in Donegal which is almost 250km in length. There was no word from Bolt on how much this trip cost but a fare estimator online put the cost at between €354.40 – €541.20.

“As expected, St. Patrick’s Day resulted in huge demand for taxis throughout the day with peak demand at midnight,” James Bowpitt, Operations Manager for Bolt Ireland.

“We’re here to help revellers get to their destination quickly and safely on the big occasions and nights out, and went one step further with this by offering drivers 0% commission for the day.

“Nonetheless, it’s plain that Dublin county needs more taxis. The total registered SPSV Taxi fleet in Dublin is just 9,517, down 235 vehicles from 2020. So although the customer demand has come back, there has actually been a reduction of registered SPSV taxi vehicles.”
