Teenager who died in Donegal International Rally named and pictured

The incident, which occurred yesterday Saturday 20 June, occurred shortly before 17.00 at the event at Trentagh, which is close to Kilmacrennan, and involved a participating vehicle in the rally.

The 15-year-old boy was pronounced dead after he was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital.

Following the incident, Gardaí are appealing for witnesses who were present at “Location 15 on Special Stage 12 Gartan”.

In particular, they are in search of those with mobile phone or dashcam footage in the area.

While two other spectators suffered non-life threatening injuries in the incident, they were also taken to Letterkenny University Hospital.

As a mark of respect by organisers, the rally was stopped and they took a decision to cancel the rest of the three-day event.

Motorsport Ireland and Donegal Motor Club said they “express their deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased”.

Meanwhile, Motorsport Ireland and An Garda Síochána have started an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

The last accident at the event happened in 2019, when three-time winner Manus Kelly died in a crash.

The rally was also cancelled in 2008, when an 18-year-old spectator died when a car left the road.

Six years earlier two marshals died in an incident at the event.

In 2012 the last spectator fatality at a Motorsport Ireland-sanctioned event occurred, when two spectators died in an incident at Cavan Stages.
