Temperatures set to plummet as 2017 begins with a cold snap

Temperatures will plunge to as low as -3 degrees in parts of Ireland on the first day of 2017 as the recent spell of mild weather comes to an end. Met Éireann have forecast a very cold night on Sunday, with lowest temperatures of zero to -3 degrees, widespread severe frost and icy patches in places. Careful now... Although Monday will be dry and sunny for the most part with only a few showers in northern parts of the country, Monday night will once again be very cold, with maximum temperatures of four to eight degrees during the day and severe frost again at night. The cold and dry weather looks likely to continue into Tuesday, but it’s expected to become milder from the middle of the week onwards, with scattered outbreaks of rain promised for Thursday and for the start of next weekend.
