“It could have been Dublin”

If you can cast your mind back to the start of the summer.

It was the beginning of June and as people went about their business in the busy streets of Borough Market, a van drove into a group of pedestrians on London Bridge before three men exited the vehicle and began indiscriminately stabbing innocent victims on the streets and in nearby bars and restaurants.

As we thought about the devastation of yet another terror attack in Europe, a part of us had the reassuring feeling which said something along the lines of ‘at least we’re safe here in Ireland, they’d never attack us here.’

Sadly, in this event, we were wrong to think that.

Paul Williams of The Sunday Independent has revealed in an article that “it could have been Dublin, not London, that was hit by an Islamic terror attack.”

Two of the attackers had surveyed a number of high-profile places in Dublin that they had identified as potential targets.

One of the attackers was married to an Irish woman and lived in Dublin for a number of years where attacks on the capital were regularly talked about.

The attacker and his wife were also involved in an internet fraud scheme targeting Irish companies.

Eight people lost their lives in the attacks in London which also left dozens more critically injured.
