An army bomb disposal team has carried out a controlled explosion on grenade found in the small village of Aughrim in Galway.

The device was found next to a path by walkers who contacted Gardaí, after arriving on the scene, they referred the matter to the Defence Forces.

The hand grenade, a Mills 36, was said to be used in the Irish War of Independence, the Civil War and the First World War.

The Army Bomb Disposal Team arrived on the scene at 5:00pm yesterday and working quickly, carried out the explosion at 5:30pm.

Gardaí are urging anyone who finds a similar device to retreat to a safe distance and call for assistance.
