The Eiffel Tower was shut down and evacuated on Friday evening

Carl Kinsella

France’s most iconic landmark, The Eiffel Tower, was shut down and evacuated on Friday evening due to fears over unattended baggage.

Reports have emerged on Twitter of the presence of armed police at the tower, but that there was no panic as the building was emptied and cordoned off.

A video from this evening shows a cleared out Eiffel Tower, and expresses that the reason for evacuation was unclear to those present.

Early reports indicate that a suspicious package is the cause of concern, but there has been no official word from French authorities.
