The front page of yesterday’s Derry News perfectly captures the tragedy of Buncrana

Carl Kinsella

The details of the Buncrana tragedy are almost incomprehensibly sad.

Yesterday’s Derry News front cover encapsulated the sheer tragedy of the deaths of Sean McGrotty, his two young sons, their grandmother and her daughter – as well as the miracle that is the rescue of baby Rioghanac-Ann by Davitt Walsh.

Walsh heroically wade into Lough Swilly in order to do what he could to help the family, and ended up saving the life of a child.

Yesterday’s Derry News featured an image of baby Rioghanac-Ann with the man who saved her life. It’s a stark reminder of both the bitter sorrow and, yet, hope that can emerge from such a terrible tragedy.
