Garda Commissioner Nóirín O'Sullivan could be in trouble over her use of a commercial email account to conduct official police business.
An officer told
RTÉ News that, on at least one occasion, he sent the commissioner an official report on an email address that was not an official Garda Síochána channel while she was Deputy Commissioner.
While Gmail accounts are set up on Garda phones and iPads, it is against the internal and electronic mail policy in An Garda Síochána to use commercial accounts for official business.
One of these emails seen by RTÉ from 2013 contained O'Sullivan's name and rank at the bottom, although the email is not believed to have had anything to do with important and confidential issues of the state.
"An Garda Síochána is satisfied that the Commissioner's devices are secure and are not compromised," they said in a statement.
However, the Policing Authority say they plan to follow up on the matter this week with An Garda Síochána.
