There is a petition to remove the controversial College Green 1916 banner in Dublin

It will be interesting to see how many signatures this attracts.

If you’ve been in the College Green area of Dublin lately you’ll have no doubt noticed all the talk about the 1916 banner that has been put up; it’s proving to be quite controversial.

While the banner looks fine at first glance, on close inspection it includes three figures – Daniel O’Connell, Charles Stewart Parnell and Henry Grattan – all who were long deceased by 1916.

Meanwhile, the other image of John Redmond has not gone down well, as he targeted thousands of Irish citizens to fight on behalf of the British Army in World War I.

This has not gone unnoticed and now a petition has been set up on Care2 to have the banner removed.

The aim is to get 50,000 signatures and if you’re interested you can get involved right here.
