There’s a good reason not to break the speed limit on Irish roads this Friday

Conor Heneghan

You only have yourself to blame if you get caught.

Motorists shouldn’t really be breaking the speed limit any time they take the wheel, but there will be an extra push to encourage them to drive safely this Friday.

An Garda Síochána have announced that this Friday, October 21, will be a designated Slow Down Day, aimed at reminding all drivers of the dangers of speeding, to comply with speed limits and to deter driving at excessive speeds.

On National Slow Down Day in August 2015, also a Friday, GoSafe checked the speed of 115,003 vehicles, with 451 vehicles detected travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit during a 24-hour period.

In case you needed reminding, all speed enforcement zones are available on the Garda website.

All road users are invited to participate by reducing speed and by demonstrating their support giving the thumbs up for Slow Down Day. Road users are invited to post photos to @gardatraffic and An Garda Síochána’s Facebook page or email to [email protected]

Schoolchildren across the country, meanwhile, are being asked to take part in a new Garda public awareness campaign to reduce speeding on our roads.

As part of the campaign, children are being asked to:

– submit suggestions to name our newest Garda member (see below);

– create a poster, song or poem highlighting the dangers of speeding.
