OFFICIAL: Theresa May to trigger Article 50 and start the Brexit process next week

Article 50 is expected to be officially triggered next Wednesday, March 29.

The process of Britain officially leaving the European Union will begin next Wednesday, March 29, with British Prime Minister Theresa May confirming on Monday that she intends to trigger Article 50 on that date. According to the BBC, a spokesperson for the Prime Minister confirmed that the UK's Ambassador to the EU, Sir Tim Barrow, informed the European Council on Monday of the date that Article 50 would be triggered. May will write a letter to the 27 members of the European Union giving them official notification of Britain’s intention to withdraw and she is expected to make a statement to the House of Commons after invoking Article 50. The official triggering of Article 50 comes nine months after the British people voted to leave the European Union by a narrow margin (51.9% - 48.1%) in the Brexit referendum last June. If the negotiations go along expected lines, Britain should have officially exited the European Union by March 2019.
