Theresa May has ruled out a second Brexit referendum

Brexit

Well, that’s that, then.

The United Kingdom continues to shamble towards Brexit, despite being seemingly unable to get its ducks in a row and put together any proposals that will lead to a trade deal with the EU upon its exit.

And even though there has been a surge in calls for a second referendum, or “People’s Vote”, it now looks inevitable that the UK will continue to limp over the finish line.

Prime Minister Theresa May has written an op-ed for today’s Sunday Telegraph in which she refers to the prospect of a second Brexit referendum as “a gross betrayal of our democracy.”

“In the summer of 2016,” she wrote, “millions came out to have their say. In many cases, for the first time in decades they trusted that their vote would count; that after years of feeling ignored by politics, their voices would be heard.”

May said that to vote again would be a betrayal of that trust.

“This government will fulfil the democratic decision of the British people by ensuring that the UK leaves the European Union on 29th March next year.”

With just seven months to go until the UK does leave the EU, there is still nothing close to a solution on the issue of the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
