This handy trick could stop your kitchen sink from clogging and smelling

This isn't exactly a new trick, but it's still effective

Alan Loughnane

If you’ve ever experienced the stomach turning stench of a smelly sink, this could help you a lot…

We’ve all lived in a house where the sink has gotten clogged from grease, or pasta that your housemate thought wouldn’t make a difference to the drain.

Well, silly housemate, just because something fits down the opening of the sink’s drain, doesn’t mean it won’t get stuck further down.

But it’s been revealed that if you pour boiling water down your sink from time to time, it can help to stop the build up of grease and other things that contribute to clog up your sink and produce that horrible smell according to Lifehacker.

Obviously, we’re not recommending pouring litre after litre of boiling water down the sink with the new water meters and all.

But it seems that if you boil your kettle to make a pot of tea and you have some water left over in the kettle, rather than letting it cool down, pour it down the sink every now and then to help keep those pipes clean.

Because, in fairness, there’s probably not that much left in the kettle after you use it so it’s hardly as if you’re going to be wasting a whole pile of water.

This can be particularly effective at clearing the sink if you use a french press for your coffee and pour the dregs down the sink afterwards.
