Motorists are being urged to drive carefully this morning.

At least 194,000 homes and businesses are without power this morning due to Storm Ellen.

The ESB said on Thursday morning: “We apologise to our customers and we are working on getting everyone re-connected as soon as it is safe to do so.

“We are currently working to repair a fault affecting your premises and will restore power as quickly as possible.”

ESB Networks said there are at least 40,000 premises without power in Cork, 35,000 in Tipperary, 20,000 in Westmeath, 15,000 in Longford and 12,000 in Limerick.

It also issued a safety notice, saying: “Fallen Electricity Wires are live and dangerous. Never approach or touch them. Call our emergency service immediately.”

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, ESB Networks Operations Manager Derek Hynes said that Storm Ellen was the third biggest storm the ESB has had to deal with in recent years – the biggest being Storm Ophelia in October of 2017.

He also said that over 50 crews from the ESB have been working overnight, and that this is the first major storm to occur at this time of year.

Easy to forget that it’s still supposed to be summer time…
