We’re not crying, it’s just been raining on our face…
English author Sue Townsend, the brilliant brain behind the hapless and beloved Adrian Mole, has died at the age of 68 after a short illness.
The author achieved worldwide success following the publication of her books about the life and times of the titular teenager Mole, beginning in 1982 with ‘The Secret Diary Of Adrian Mole, aged 13 3/4,’ and the eighth and final installment, ‘Adrian Mole: The Prostrate Years,’ was released in 2009.
Although the main character of Mole was a British boy growing up through adolescence under Margaret Thatcher’s government during the 1980s, even here in Ireland there was still something inherently relatable about an average young teenager who had terrible acne, was perpetually uncool and was woeful with the women, especially when it came to the love of his life, Pandora.
Ah, Pandora. She will be ours, oh yes, she will be ours.
For now though, we’ll leave you with this very touching tweet from ‘Adrian Mole’ himself…
I owe her my life and literary career. Sue Townsend, I remain your humble and obedient servant and friend. Adrian Albert Mole x
