Traffic delays, power cuts and weather warnings as 130km/h winds hit Ireland

Batten down the hatches… again.

Two weather warnings are in place this morning…

After yesterday’s bad weather that saw some absolutely huge waves forming around coastal areas, the country was hit by strong winds as high as 130km/h overnight.

Thousands were left without power, with over 2,000 people affected in Milford, Donegal, and nearly 1,500 affected in Cratloe, Clare. Power is expected to be restored to Milford before 8am, while those in Cratloe may not get power back until midday.

Due to the bad weather, Met Éireann has issued a Yellow Weather Warning for most of Leinster, while an Orange Weather Warning is in place for Munster and parts of Connacht. Both will be in place until 10am this morning.

Motorists are being urged to take extra caution this morning, as black ice and fallen debris may still be on the roads from last night.

As for today’s forecast, Met Éireann predicts: “Very cold and windy at first today with sunny spells and occasional showers, some heavy or thundery and some of sleet or snow in places for a time this morning with some icy patches.”

“However the showers will be of rain or hail this afternoon and it will gradually become less windy through the day.”
