Could the traffic mayhem on Dublin’s College Green finally be resolved on Tuesday?

Tony Cuddihy

The introduction of the Luas Cross City has caused gridlock in recent months.

A meeting will take place on Tuesday between Dublin City Council and the National Transport Authority in a bid to resolve the traffic mayhem caused by the introduction of the Luas Cross City service.

Rush hour on College Green has seen serious delays as regular traffic, buses, bikes and the Luas struggle to get through the bottleneck close to the front gate of Trinity College.

The Irish Times reports Dick Brady, the assistant chief executive of the council, as saying that there have been “numerous complaints” about the delays, despite Dublin Bus reducing its fleet through the area by 20% at peak times.

The council and the NTA will discuss on Tuesday whether or not further interventions are needed.

Brady denied that motorists were being targetted by proposed changes.

“Dublin City Council do not have a vendetta against the driver of a private motor car,” he said. “Our only aim is that the road space we do have is used in the most efficient manner and the best possible use to the citizens of this city…We don’t have any ulterior motives.”

He added that the city’s bus routes are being analysed by the NTA.

He feels this, “should bring forward, I hope, radical proposals in the manner buses operate and the routes they operate.”

An Bord Pleanála are set to hold a public hearing on the College Green Plaza on 21 February – the building of the Plaza would be mean College Green being closed entirely to buses, taxis and private cars.
