Rail passengers to expect serious delays following collision with herd of cattle

Kate Demolder

Customers are being asked to expect serious delays.

A train travelling from Heuston to Galway on Thursday afternoon has been compromised following an incident involving a herd of cattle.

The vehicle hit eight cows while travelling west, injuring all eight and causing significant damage to the train.

As a result, the train has been quite serious damaged and a number of animals are in critical condition.

It’s understood that the incident happened at Meelahan’s Crossing just outside Tullamore, County Offaly.

According to reports, passengers are still on the train, and expect to be for some time, and refreshments are being provided to them by staff.

Barry Kenny from Irish Rail spoke to JOE about the incident, which happened just after 3.30pm on Thursday.

“Eight cows were involved [in the incident] and there seems to be some damage to the train, that’s why it’s stopped there. There will be quite a significant disruption because of it.

“We’re currently making arrangements to get people off the train as soon as we can. We’re providing extra water and refreshments to passengers, given the weather, but for the next while, all Dublin to Galway and Dublin to Westport services will be quite significantly delayed as a result.”
