‘Such a sweet lad’ – Tributes paid to 17-year-old who died in Cavan workplace accident

Locals have described the community as ‘devastated’.

Tributes have poured in following the death of a 17-year-old boy in a workplace incident in Cavan.

Reece Donohoe from Kilnaleck died following an incident at the Wilton Waste Recycling Limited facility at Kifagh, near Ballyjamesduff on Thursday afternoon.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Wilton Waste said: “The company offers their deepest condolences to the employee’s family at this very sad time.

“As a mark of respect, the company has decided to close the gates until further notice.”

Local Fine Gael Councillor Trevor Smith has said the community is “devastated” following the news.

Speaking to The Irish Sun, he said: “The local community is in complete shock and it’s a terrible tragedy in our area.

“We are all devastated for the family, for the parents, siblings, the whole family and friends.

“I have no doubt the community will support the family in any way they can and I wish to offer my deepest sympathies to the family.”

Reece’s uncle posted on Facebook saying: “You meant the world to me Reece you were my everything my heart is broken. Rest in peace gentle nephew.”

Others offered condolences on social media following the announcement of Reece’s death.

One commented: “Sincere condolences to Brian, Mary, Niall and family. Such a sweet lad with always a beautiful smile on his face whenever we meet. Oisin will always treasure your memories together. Rest in peace Reece.”

Another said: “Rest peacefully Reece. A young man taken far too soon from this life. My thoughts are with Mary, Amber and all the Dohohoe family and Reece’s friends. May you all find comfort in your memories and in each other.”

As per his death notice on, Reece will be taken to St. Patrick’s Church, Kilnaleck for Funeral Mass at 12 noon.

His burial will take place afterwards in Kill Cemetery.
