Alan Loughnane

The boom is back… oh, wait.

News broke last night that the Fianna Fáil Dublin Central constituency organisation had unanimously passed a motion calling for a letter to be written to Bertie Ahern asking the former Taoiseach to rejoin the party.

The chair of the constituency organisation said it is now up to Ahern whether or not he wants to rejoin the party.

Ahern, who served as Taoiseach from 1997 until 2008, resigned from the Fianna Fáil party in 2012 after a motion was proposed to expel him as a member of Fianna Fáilfollowing the revelations of the Mahon Tribunal.

Although accusations of corruption against Ahern were not sustained, he was found to have received payments from developers and his explanations for those payments were “summarily rejected”.

The news that of a possible return of Ahern following his controversial exit prompted quite a reaction online.
