At sentencing today the judge ruled it would be ‘unjust’ to jail Willie McAteer and Pat Whelan.

You may recall that while Sean FitzPatrick was acquited on all charges a few weeks back, two Anglo directors, Willie McAteer and Pat Whelan were found guilty of 10 counts of breaching Section 60 of the Companies Act 1963 by lending money to people to buy Anglo shares.

Today, McAteer and Whelan returned to court for sentencing where Judge Martin Nolan ruled that the men would not serve a custodial sentence.

The judge ruled that it would be ‘unjust’ for the duo to serve time behind bars as ‘a State agency had led them into error and illegality’.

McAteer and Whelan will now be assessed for Community Service, returning to court on July 31.
