Two men in their 50’s have been arrested in relation to the Creeslough service station explosion in 2022.

Ten people died in the tragedy at the Applegreen service station and apartment building on 7th October 2022, including 5-year-old Shauna Flanagan Garwe and 13-year-old James Monaghan.

The arrests were made this morning as part of the ongoing investigation.

Both suspects are currently detained under the provisions of section 4 Criminal Justice Act 1984 at separate garda stations in Donegal, and can be held for up to 24 hours.

A statement released by a Garda Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) read: “The investigation continues to be led by local Gardaí in Donegal Division, supported by the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (GNBCI) and other agencies, including the Health & Safety Authority (HSA) & the Commission for the Regulation of Utilities (CRU).”

The news comes a day after regeneration plans were outlined for the village in a public council meeting.

Since the tragedy, there have been numerous consultation sessions with local people and the bereaved families led by Donegal County Council, the Creeslough Community Association, and Arup Consultants, who acted pro bono.

The main development from the discussion was confirmation of a brand new community centre for the local area, with sporting and many other facilities.

Liam Ward, Director of Services with Donegal County Council, told Donegal Daily: “The people of Creeslough are on a healing journey since the tragedy and I hope this centre will help them through that.”

Local parish priest Fr John John Duffy spoke about how Creeslough continues to be on a journey of healing which may take generations to complete.

But he said he hoped the new community hub will as a a “beating heart” for the community in those trying times ahead.
