Update provided on Yves Sakila death with security set to be interviewed

It is believed Gardaí do not have any evidence of foul play.

On Friday, May 15, Yves Sakila was detained by security guards outside Arnotts on Henry Street in Dublin for a number of minutes after allegedly stealing from the department store. During the incident, he became unresponsive.

When Gardaí arrived on the scene, they began performing CPR, however, the man was later pronounced dead at the Mater hospital.

Interviews with the security guards involved are set to take place over the coming weeks, and all will give witness statements to Garda investigators.

It is believed that the staff have been identified and spoken to already.

Gardaí and Fiosru, the independent policing watchdog, are both carrying out investigations.

Vice-president of the Congolese community in Ireland, Laure Zoya, said Mr Sakila's mother, Angel, is 'heartbroken, overwhelmed and still in shock' following the death of her son.

“She is determined to establish exactly what happened in the moments before he became unresponsive but she is very overwhelmed right now."

Protests have taken place outside the Dáil, with many demanding that CCTV footage related to the incident be released in order to better understand what happened.

Vigils have also been organised by the public calling for justice and transparency over the man's death.
