The reaction was mostly positive.

Sinead O’Connor has been voicing her dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs in Ireland and in Irish politics recently.

O’Connor is also unhappy with our national anthem Amhrán na bhFiann and contacted Enda Kenny earlier this year to try and hold a competition to find a new anthem.

The Taoiseach said no, but that hasn’t stopped O’Connor coming up with her own version with most of the lyrics inspired by the 1916 Proclamation.

She performed the song at her gig in Vicar Street in Dublin last night, watch it here (lyrics below).

The lyrics of Sinead O’Connor’s new Irish national anthem are as follows:

We declare our right
to ownership of this land
to be sovereign
and indefeasible.
Nothing has extinguished that right
nor can it be extinguished
except by
the destruction of the people

We were promised civil liberty
equal rights and equal opportunity
All lies galore, all we ever got was war
Now we chant for a new country

And we place our cause
before The Most High God
whose blessings
we invoke upon our hearts
In this supreme hour
let us by our valour
prove worthy
of our august destiny

We were promised civil liberty
equal rights and equal opportunity
All lies galore, all we ever got was war.
Now we chant for a new country.

Well, what do you think?
