Scary stuff.

Police in the Netherlands arrested a 19-year old man last night after he had gained access to a Dutch TV station brandishing a fake gun and demanding airtime on prime time television.

The man entered NOS studios yesterday evening and demanded to be given airtime on the national broadcaster, while also claiming that explosives carrying radioactive material had been planted in various parts of the country.

The gunman was led into an empty studio believing that he would be going on air but was instead apprehended by police, who had surrounded the studios, located approximately 20km east of Amsterdam, and evacuated those inside.

NOS1 displayed a message at 8pm local time that read “In connection with circumstances, no broadcast is available at this time”, and went off air for over an hour while police searched the building.

When it resumed broadcast, it showed the gunman in the studio, walking back and forth while seemingly talking to some person or persons nearby, all the while holding the fake gun behind his back.

The gunman – who told a NOS reporter he was from a “hackers collective” – was then dramatically apprehended by police officials and the incident is currently being investigated.

Police are also looking into claims contained in a letter the gunman allegedly brought to the building containing threats about the explosives planted in different parts of the Netherlands.

How the gunman managed to get through security – which has been tightened in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris earlier this month – is unclear but the gunman is now facing charges of kidnapping, possessing of a firearm and threatening people with a weapon.
