Vincent Browne gives his presidential endorsement and slams several other candidates

Presidential election

Vincent Browne is sorely missed on air.

The iconic broadcaster was often a firm voice of reason amongst the tumult of Irish politics, and he has taken to Twitter this morning to give his verdict on the upcoming presidential election.

Writing after the final presidential debate yesterday evening, Browne gave a whole-hearted endorsement to incumbent Michael D. Higgins, while slating half of the other candidates.

“What is surprising in this Presidential campaign is not that Michael D has such overwhelming support, but that ANYBODY would indicate support for the Dragon windbags. There is NOBODY in Ireland better suited to be President for the next seven years than Michael D”.

Browne is referring to the three businessmen on the ballot: Peter Casey, Gavin Duffy and Sean Gallagher. All three have also starred as “Dragons” on the reality TV/business show Dragons’ Den.

The Irish public will go to the polls on Friday (26 October) to decide on the next President of Ireland, with six candidates to choose from: President Michael D. Higgins, Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada, Senator Joan Freeman, Peter Casey, Gavin Duffy and Sean Gallagher (the aforementioned Dragons).

As things stand, Michael D. Higgins is enjoying a comfortable lead in the polls — clocking in at 68% in the most recent Red C survey. Sean Gallagher is his closest competitor with 12%. Gavin Duffy and Peter Casey are polling at 3% and 2% respectively.
